Come out for a 90-day amnesty window for Lagos landlords with existing housing without approval.

Lagos State offers a 90-day amnesty to landlords with unauthorized buildings. Meet your consultant and present your existing housing paperwork for validation and approval during the amnesty period.

This window runs from May 2 to July 31, 2024, and is announced by Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development.

To combat the frequent building collapses in Lagos State, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, has introduced a new amnesty program for landlords with unapproved constructions. This initiative, announced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu‘s appointee in August 2023, seeks to enhance building safety by promoting adherence to regulatory standards. Dr. Olumide highlighted that many collapses are due to old, unsafe buildings and substandard building practices.

Dr. Olumide also stressed the importance of rigorous soil testing and professional oversight during construction to prevent future tragedies. The Lagos State Ministry has put in place strict procedures for building planning and control to maintain high construction standards. Additionally, he discussed the ministry’s efforts to boost its workforce through the Certified Accredited Programme (CAP), which aims to incorporate certified professionals to aid in managing the operational demands.

Moreover, Dr. Olumide advised on the necessity of obtaining proper clearance from district offices before beginning any construction work. Property owners should ensure their land complies with zoning laws to smooth the building approval process. He also revealed plans to digitize the Lagos State building permit application process, encouraging the use of online platforms for more transparent and efficient interactions with the ministry.

On infrastructure development, updates were given on the Fourth Mainland Bridge project, which will begin soon, aiming for minimal community disruption. Dr. Olumide also mentioned progress in resolving the Magodo land dispute. Concluding, he reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to safeguarding the integrity of Lagos buildings and urged public cooperation with building regulations to prevent collapses, enhancing overall safety and sustainability in Lagos State.
