Youths to Receive Quality Education — Oluremi Tinubu and Akobundu
The Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), in partnership with various national and international organizations, is significantly increasing the number of Nigerian youths with access to quality education. This initiative, led by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, recently unveiled 200 beneficiaries of the AUDA-NEPAD/African School of Economics/RHI Scholarships.
Commitment to Education
At the unveiling event held at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja, Senator Oluremi Tinubu emphasized the administration’s dedication to education. She highlighted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government prioritizes education through various policies and programs. These include the zero-interest student loan scheme, bursary and scholarship awards, and education infrastructure development projects aimed at providing all Nigerian students with unhindered access to education. Last year, the Renewed Hope Initiative awarded scholarships worth N1,000,000 per anum for four years, along with brand new laptops, to students in Nigerian tertiary institutions. These scholarships help cover tuition fees, books, and other educational expenses. The second tranche of payments for these beneficiaries is scheduled for September 2024.
Focus on the Girl-Child
Senator Tinubu has consistently emphasized the importance of educating and empowering the Nigerian girl-child, who has often been culturally and traditionally excluded from comprehensive formal education. To address this, she announced the establishment of Alternative High Schools for Girls across the country. Minister for Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, praised the First Lady as an education champion. He mentioned that the Ministry is supporting her efforts by providing an additional 4,000 bursary grants for tertiary education students in Nigeria.
International Partnerships
Princess Gloria Akobundu, CEO of AUDA-NEPAD in Nigeria, noted that the beneficiaries are set to receive quality education both within and outside Nigeria. Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, Leena Pylvanainen, expressed her country’s readiness to explore more educational partnerships with the Renewed Hope Initiative. A total of 200 students in various fields will begin their academic careers at the African School of Economics, an affiliate of Princeton University, USA, thanks to the scholarships.
