First lady of Nigeria-Oluremi Tinubu
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has introduced an empowerment program designed to help 1,000 women petty traders in Delta State. The initiative aims to boost small businesses and support families in Nigeria.
Supporting Small Traders in Delta State
Speaking at the event in Asaba, Delta State, Mrs. Tinubu highlighted that small and medium-sized businesses, especially petty traders, are the backbone of Nigeria’s local economy. She emphasized the government’s commitment to helping them thrive despite the many challenges they face. Mrs. Tinubu expressed her appreciation to the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, and his wife, Tobore Oborevwori, for their support and hospitality during her visit.
Financial Support for Petty Traders
The First Lady announced that through the Renewed Hope Initiative, the government is providing grants to help traders grow their businesses. Each of the 1,000 women selected in Delta State will receive a grant of N50,000. Nationwide, the initiative will support 37,000 women, with a total of N1.85 billion set aside for this program. Mrs. Tinubu explained that the funds will help women overcome business challenges, create jobs, and contribute to Nigeria’s economy.
We are empowering women petty traders who are the backbone of our local economies, helping them overcome challenges and grow their businesses for a better future.” – Oluremi Tinubu
Governor’s Contribution and Beneficiaries’ Reactions
In her remarks, the wife of the Delta State Governor, Tobore Oborevwori, praised Mrs. Tinubu for launching the program in Delta. She also mentioned that the governor donated an additional N50 million, raising the grant amount to N100,000 for each beneficiary. Some of the beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for the program but also called on President Bola Tinubu to reduce the cost of fuel and goods. They believe lower prices will allow the grants to make a greater impact on their businesses.
The Renewed Hope Initiative is part of the government’s effort to economically empower women across Nigeria. By providing financial support, the program aims to help petty traders expand their businesses and strengthen their contribution to the economy.
