Ogun State Launches Health Insurance Scheme for Workers

Governor,Dapo Abiodun

The Ogun State Government has introduced a new health insurance scheme specifically for workers in the formal sector, including civil servants, public servants, and employees in the organized private sector. This initiative is part of the activities marking the 2024 Public Service Week.

Government to Cover 50% of Premiums

During the official launch of the scheme in Abeokuta on Tuesday, Governor Dapo Abiodun announced that the state government would pay 50% of the insurance premium for every worker who registers. Represented by his deputy, Engineer Noimot Salako-Oyedele, the governor emphasized the administration’s commitment to the well-being of public servants, whom he described as the “engine room” of the government.

Commitment to Public Service Welfare

Governor Abiodun also spoke on the theme of the 2024 Civil Service Week, “Building a Socially Responsive Public Service in the 21st Century: A Place of Ethics and Values.” He reassured public servants that their welfare remains a top priority for the government. He highlighted previous initiatives, such as the payment of a N100 million counterpart fund, which granted the state access to the Federal Government’s Basic Health Care Provision Fund, and the launch of the informal sector of the Ogun State Health Insurance Scheme (OGSHIS) in 2020. The governor also mentioned the release of N310 million earlier this year to provide health insurance for low-income residents, as well as N324 million to support 3,300 pregnant women under the Ibidero scheme. This scheme covers antenatal and postnatal care and provides a N5,000 token after delivery.

This health insurance scheme is a testament to our commitment to the welfare of our workers. By covering 50% of the premium, we are ensuring that our public servants, who are the backbone of our government, have access to quality healthcare. This is not just a promise but a step towards a healthier and more productive workforce.” – Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Call for Collective Effort

Abiodun stressed that the success of the health insurance scheme would require cooperation among health officials, stakeholders, and the public. He urged everyone involved to work together to ensure the system is effectively implemented and continuously improved. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, noted that nearly 80% of Nigerians pay for healthcare out-of-pocket, making them vulnerable to high medical costs. She encouraged Ogun State residents to take advantage of both the informal and formal sector schemes to protect themselves from financial hardship due to health expenses. The Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, praised the scheme for improving access to healthcare for workers and urged them to support the government’s efforts. Similarly, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Hameed Ademola, commended the governor for covering 50% of the premium costs and called for the program to be consistent and sustainable.

In conclusion, the launch of Ogun State’s health insurance scheme marks a significant step towards improving the well-being of workers in the formal sector. By subsidizing 50% of the premiums, the government is making healthcare more accessible and affordable for its employees. This initiative not only reflects the administration’s dedication to public service welfare but also underscores the importance of collective effort in achieving a sustainable and effective healthcare system. As the scheme rolls out, it is crucial for all stakeholders to support and embrace this opportunity for better health and security.
