NAFDAC Urges Businesses to Prioritize Accurate Branding and Regulatory Compliance

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has called on Nigerian businesses to prioritize adherence to health and safety regulations, particularly focusing on accurate branding and proper handling of regulated products.

Importance of Regulatory Compliance

During a panel session at the 2024 African Retail Congress in Lagos, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by the Director of the Northwest Zone, Nantin Dadi, emphasized that every product, especially those under regulation, must comply with specific laws. These include processed foods, medicines, cosmetics, medical devices, packaged water, herbal products, and chemicals. Dadi highlighted the need for businesses, especially retailers, to be familiar with local and international regulations governing the production, storage, and distribution of these items.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

Dadi warned that failing to comply with NAFDAC regulations could lead to serious financial losses. He explained, “A single officer aware of the law can disrupt your entire distribution network. If they close you down for a week, you could lose millions.” He also noted that poor storage practices, such as selling yogurt without refrigeration, can result in product seizures and heavy fines.

Expanding into New Markets

Businesses looking to expand into new markets must conduct thorough regulatory mapping. Dadi advised companies to identify all relevant regulatory bodies, such as NAFDAC, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), and the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, to avoid conflicts and operate efficiently in new regions.

The Role of Accurate Branding

Another concern raised by NAFDAC is the prevalence of false claims and misleading labels on products. Dadi stressed that labels are the first point of contact between consumers and products. Claims such as “cures all diseases” without scientific evidence will result in the product being removed from the market. NAFDAC is committed to ensuring that consumers are protected from such misleading information.

Your label is the first contact between the customer and the product. If you claim that a product cures all diseases without evidence, it will be removed. NAFDAC ensures that consumers are protected from such misleading information.” – Nantin Dadi, NAFDAC Director, Northwest Zone.

Staying Informed

NAFDAC urges businesses to make use of the resources available on its official website to better understand the regulations and avoid penalties. “It’s important to ensure that what’s written on your product label is accurate,” Dadi concluded, stressing the agency’s role in ensuring that products meet the highest standards for consumer safety. This reminder to prioritize regulatory compliance is crucial for businesses aiming for long-term success in Nigeria’s competitive market.

NAFDAC’s call for businesses to prioritize accurate branding and compliance with health and safety regulations is a critical reminder of the importance of consumer protection and fair business practices in Nigeria. By adhering to the regulations surrounding product labeling, storage, and distribution, businesses not only avoid costly penalties but also build trust with consumers. NAFDAC’s efforts to monitor and enforce these rules ensure that products in the market meet the necessary standards, ultimately safeguarding public health and contributing to a more transparent and accountable business environment.
