LASTMA Warns Pedestrians After Fatal Hit-and-Run in Lagos 

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a warning to pedestrians to avoid crossing highways following a tragic hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of one person in the Onipanu area of Lagos on Saturday night. 

Fatal Accident Details 

The incident occurred around 9 pm on Saturday. According to Nosa Okunbor, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the driver involved in the accident fled the scene after hitting the victim. The vehicle’s registration number is not known. An eyewitness described how the vehicle struck the victim, a yet-to-be-identified adult male, before speeding away. LASEMA’s response team arrived promptly at the scene and provided immediate medical attention to the victim, who had suffered severe head injuries. 

Medical Response and Outcome 

Despite the urgent care provided by the Pre-Hospital Care Unit, the victim’s injuries proved fatal. He was transported to the Trauma Centre in Gbagada for further treatment but unfortunately died there. The LASEMA team’s efforts included transporting the victim swiftly to the hospital and providing critical care en route. Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, emphasized the importance of pedestrian safety on highways. LASTMA’s warning aims to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of pedestrians crossing busy roads. Following the incident, the deceased’s body has been handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for further handling. LASTMA and other agencies continue to urge the public to exercise caution and adhere to traffic safety rules to avoid such tragic events. The authorities are still investigating the hit-and-run case and seeking any information that may lead to the identification and apprehension of the driver involved.
