Flood: Lagos Issues 48-Hour Eviction Notice to Gbagada-Bariga Channel Squatters

Flood in Lagos – ARDNig

The Lagos State Government has issued a 48-hour eviction notice to property owners with illegal structures and squatters along the Gbagada-Bariga Channel. These structures have obstructed the drainage system, causing recent severe flooding. Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab announced that once the notices expire, the government will remove these obstructions to restore proper water flow and prevent future flooding. This action follows a recent heavy downpour that caused significant disruptions across Lagos, including the collapse of a building in Mushin.

Impact of Illegal Structures

According to Mr. Wahab, these illegal structures have been blocking the drainage channel that helps prevent flooding in Bariga, Gbagada, Sholuyi, and surrounding areas. He stated that these obstructions have turned into a nuisance and a security risk for the community. The official statement from Mr. Wahab reads: “The drainage channel, which defloods Bariga, Gbagada, Sholuyi downstream communities and environs, and discharges into System 1, has been taken over by squatters who have constituted a nuisance and security risk to the estate. Property owners who built structures to obstruct the free flow of water in the area will also be removed. Shanties were erected along the channel’s length, and their activities blocked collectors supposed to carry storm water into the channel, resulting in the flooding experienced during the week.

Action Plan

Once the eviction notices expire, the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources will begin removing these illegal structures to restore proper drainage and prevent further flooding. Last week, Lagos experienced severe flooding due to a 10-hour downpour. This heavy rain caused significant disruptions, including the collapse of a two-story building in Mushin, halted traffic, and kept thousands of residents and students at home.
