FG Pledges Support for Youths in Urban Development

Minister of Housing and Urban Developement, Ahmed Dangiwa – ARDnig

The Federal Government of Nigeria is taking significant steps to engage and support young people in shaping the future of our cities. At the recent 2024 Urban October event, which celebrates World Cities Day, the Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, emphasized the importance of youth in urban development.

The Role of Youth in Urban Development

Dangiwa highlighted that today’s youth are crucial in tackling the challenges of rapid urbanization and climate change. He stated, “Today’s youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow; they are already making significant contributions to sustainable urbanization through innovation and advocacy.” This means that young people are already making a difference by coming up with creative solutions and advocating for changes that benefit everyone.

Incorporating Youth Perspectives

The government is committed to including the voices of young people in urban planning. Dangiwa stressed the need to create spaces where youth ideas can be heard and put into action. This is a great opportunity for young Nigerians to participate in discussions about their cities and influence decisions that affect their lives. Engaging in these conversations can help youth understand their role in their communities and take active steps toward positive change.

Empowering Youth Through Initiatives

Several initiatives are already in place to empower young Nigerians. One key initiative is the establishment of a National Social Housing Fund, which aims to help lower-income individuals access affordable housing. This is vital for many young people who are looking for stable living conditions. By learning about these initiatives, youth can find resources and support that can help them thrive in urban settings.

Collaboration for a Sustainable Future

During the event, Marcus Ogunbiyi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, called for collaboration to involve youth in conversations about their cities. Abdulmumin Jibrin, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Housing, also pledged strong support for youth engagement initiatives. This collective effort shows that the government values the input of young people and is willing to work together to build sustainable urban environments.

Your Role in Urban Development

As young Nigerians, you have the power to influence your communities and contribute to the future of urban development. By staying informed about government initiatives and participating in discussions, you can ensure your voices are heard. Embrace opportunities for innovation and advocacy to make a lasting impact on your cities. Together, we can shape a brighter future for all.

Conclusion

Young people are essential to the future of urban development in Nigeria. By actively participating and advocating for their needs, they can help create sustainable and thriving cities.
