The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to actively engage and support Nigerian youths in developing sustainable urban solutions for the country’s future. This pledge was highlighted during the 2024 Urban October event, held in celebration of World Cities Day, which this year emphasized youth-led climate action.

The Role of Youth in Urban Development

Speaking at the event, the Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, acknowledged the essential role young people play in addressing the pressing challenges posed by urbanization and climate change. “Today’s youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow; they are already making significant contributions to sustainable urbanization through innovation and advocacy,” he stated. Dangiwa emphasized the government’s dedication to including youth perspectives in urban planning processes. He noted that incorporating the ideas of young people can lead to more effective and innovative solutions, as well as help in building inclusive cities.

National Initiatives for Youth Empowerment

Among the government’s initiatives aimed at empowering youth is the National Social Housing Fund, which seeks to make affordable housing accessible to lower-income Nigerians. Through this fund, the government hopes to foster a sense of ownership and security among young Nigerians, encouraging them to participate actively in the nation’s urban development efforts. Dangiwa highlighted how these programs will ensure youth have access to necessary resources and opportunities, further enabling their involvement in urban planning.

Call for Collaboration

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Marcus Ogunbiyi, urged a collaborative approach, emphasizing the importance of including youth voices in discussions that shape urban policies. He stressed that involving young people directly in urban planning can lead to solutions that reflect the needs of current and future generations. Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Housing, Abdulmumin Jibrin, also expressed his strong support for youth engagement in urban projects. “We pledge our support towards any programme you might be doing,” Jibrin affirmed, assuring the government’s readiness to back youth-led initiatives.

World Cities Day: A Focus on Youth-led Climate Action

World Cities Day, dedicated to sustainable urbanization, chose the theme “Youth Leading Climate Action for Cities” for 2024. The event underscored the urgent need for cities to adopt climate-friendly practices and highlighted youth as pivotal agents of change in this mission. With the Federal Government’s recent commitments, Nigeria aims to foster a new generation of leaders who will help build resilient, sustainable cities capable of tackling future climate challenges.

The Federal Government’s pledge to engage and support youths in Nigeria’s urban development marks a significant step towards creating sustainable and inclusive cities. By acknowledging the vital role of young people in shaping urban policies and climate action, the government emphasizes the importance of their ideas, energy, and innovation in addressing rapid urbanization challenges. Through initiatives like the National Social Housing Fund and commitments from leaders across ministries, there is a clear pathway for empowering youth to take an active role in city planning and development.
