FG Introduces USSD Code to Simplify Tax Payments: 829#

FIRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has launched a new USSD code, *829#, aimed at simplifying tax payments for Nigerians. This development is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the ease of doing business and enhance the overall experience for taxpayers. The announcement was made by FIRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, during the agency’s Customer Service Week celebration, held at the Revenue House in Abuja.

Why the USSD Code Matters

The introduction of the *829# USSD code makes Nigeria the sixth African country to use this technology for tax payments. This move allows taxpayers across Nigeria to access key tax services directly from their mobile phones, without the need for an internet connection. This is particularly helpful for people in remote areas where internet access may be limited. By using the USSD code, taxpayers can now perform various tax-related tasks in real-time. These tasks include retrieving their Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), verifying their Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC), getting information on different tax types and rates, locating the nearest FIRS office, and asking general tax-related questions.

FIRS Commitment to Simplifying Tax Administration

At the launch event, Adedeji emphasized that the USSD code is another step toward simplifying the tax process and making it easier for all Nigerians to engage with the FIRS. He stated that the code will ensure that taxpayers—whether in busy urban areas or rural communities—can now access the FIRS’ services quickly and easily. With the *829# USSD code, taxpayers now have the power to: retrieve their Taxpayer Identification Number, verify their Tax Clearance Certificate, access information on tax types and rates, locate the nearest FIRS office, and get answers to general tax-related inquiries. Without the need for internet access, all these services are now available with a simple mobile phone,” Adedeji said. This new technology reflects FIRS’ dedication to creating an efficient, transparent, and user-friendly tax system, according to Adedeji.

With the 829# USSD code, taxpayers—whether in bustling cities or remote areas—now have the power to access key services directly from their mobile phones, without needing internet access. This reflects our commitment to making tax compliance seamless, efficient, and accessible for all Nigerians.” — Zacch Adedeji, FIRS Chairman

Launch of the Customer Centricity Guide

In addition to the USSD code, FIRS also launched a Customer Centricity Guide during the event. This guide outlines the agency’s commitment to treating taxpayers with respect, professionalism, and efficiency. It includes policies, processes, and procedures aimed at ensuring that taxpayers are placed at the center of service delivery. Adedeji stressed that the guide is a reminder that taxpayers are not just clients but partners in nation-building. He urged all FIRS employees to follow the principles outlined in the guide to ensure a positive experience for taxpayers. The guide serves as a reminder to us all that the taxpayer is not just a client but a valued partner in nation-building. Through the combination of the *829# USSD code and the Customer Centricity Guide, we are reinforcing a culture of service excellence and making tax compliance not just a duty but an experience that fosters trust and voluntary participation,” Adedeji explained.

As FIRS continues to modernize and improve its services, the introduction of the *829# USSD code and the Customer Centricity Guide marks a significant step toward creating a more efficient and taxpayer-friendly system. The FIRS Chairman encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of the *829# service and provide feedback to help further improve the agency’s offerings. With these new tools, FIRS is not only simplifying tax payments but also fostering trust, ensuring transparency, and promoting voluntary compliance among taxpayers across Nigeria.
