Former President Obasanjo highlighted the dangers of drug abuse at a sensitisation event, urging youths to avoid drugs and seek help if needed. Experts emphasized education, prevention, and support as key strategies, with inspiring recovery stories encouraging individuals to reclaim their lives.

The Danger of Drug Abuse in Africa

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned African youths against drug abuse, describing it as a destructive habit that cuts lives short. Speaking at the Fly Above The High sensitisation programme on drug abuse in Abeokuta, he highlighted how drug consumption has become a major problem in Africa. Once seen as a transit zone for drugs, the continent now struggles with increasing rates of addiction. Obasanjo urged youths to reject drugs and stressed that those struggling with addiction should seek help to avoid tragic outcomes.

Seeking Help and Offering Support

Obasanjo shared personal experiences, including the loss of a cousin to drug addiction, to emphasize the need for support and early intervention. He described addiction as a disease that can be managed with the right help. Instead of hiding struggles, individuals should seek treatment and support. He also called on families and communities to pray for and encourage those battling addiction, reminding everyone that even small acts of support can make a difference.

Educating Young People About Drug Risks

Dr. Kunle Adesina, President of the Recovery Advocacy Network, stressed the importance of educating young people about the dangers of drugs. He revealed that millions of Nigerians use substances, with one in five users being female. Adesina emphasized prevention and called for stronger laws to reduce drug abuse. Educating young people about the harmful effects of psychoactive substances is key to protecting their future and preventing addiction.

“Addiction is a disease, but it can be managed with support and determination. Seek help and save your future.”

How Drugs Affect the Brain and Life

Mental health expert Dr. Sam Abah explained how drug use rewires the brain and leads to dependency. He cautioned that addiction damages the brain and puts lives at risk. Abah encouraged youths to avoid drugs to preserve their future. For those already addicted, he advised stopping immediately and seeking professional help. Addiction may be tough to overcome, but it is not impossible with the right support.

Inspiring Stories of Recovery

Former addict and Vice President of the Recovery Advocacy Network, Dr. Abubakar Salami, shared his story of overcoming addiction. He attributed his recovery to faith and determination, encouraging others to seek God’s help and be resolute in breaking free from addiction. The event ended with renewed calls for stronger community action, effective laws, and collective efforts to support those reclaiming their lives from drug addiction.

Conclusion

Drug abuse threatens the future of Africa’s youth, but education, support, and determination can break its hold. By learning about the dangers, seeking help, and supporting others, we can build a stronger, healthier society. Let’s stand together and create a better tomorrow.
