BIC, a global stationery brand, has honored Nigerian artists for their exceptional talent in the sixth edition of its Art Master Africa competition. This contest, which highlights creativity through ballpoint pen art, focused on the theme Ubuntu, a philosophy of unity and interdependence.

Nigerians Shine in Africa-Wide Competition

The 2024 competition brought together participants from across Africa to creatively interpret the Ubuntu theme using BIC ballpoint pens. At the award ceremony held in Lagos, Nigerian artists Joseph Akpan and Joshua Makinde emerged victorious. Joseph Akpan, the regional winner, was celebrated for his artwork titled Stronger Together, earning a $2,000 cash prize, a feature in the Art Master Africa Metaverse Gallery, and a potential inclusion in BIC’s global Art Collection.

Joshua Makinde, the national winner, won $500 for his piece Ayodeji, which also captured the essence of African unity and resilience. Both artworks stood out for their compelling representation of Africa’s collective strength and cultural heritage.

Celebrating African Creativity

Speaking about the competition, Akpan expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, “This year’s theme, Ubuntu, reflects Africa’s power in unity and community. I am proud that my work resonates with this idea. BIC’s support of African talent is truly commendable. Makinde also shared his thoughts, describing the competition as an inspiring platform for creatives. “Being part of Art Master Africa has allowed me to showcase my vision to the world. I encourage other artists to seize this opportunity,” he said.

Growing Platform for African Artists

Art is a powerful tool to tell Africa’s stories, and platforms like BIC’s Art Master Africa competition help showcase Nigerian talent to the world. Creativity thrives when we celebrate unity and resilience.

New Milestones and Partnerships

The 2024 edition introduced the Art Master Africa Metaverse Gallery, a virtual space that features work from past and present winners, bringing African creativity to a global audience. Additionally, BIC partnered with Alliance Française in Nigeria to support and promote the local art community.

Why This Matters to Nigerians
