Lagos State Denies Plans to Ban Sachet Water

Satchet Water

The Lagos State Government has dismissed rumors of a sachet water ban, clarifying its stance on plastic waste management. Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, addressed the issue in a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday.

Viral Video Sparks Controversy

A viral video showing individuals destroying sachet water packs in factories and on buses fueled speculation about a government-imposed ban. However, Wahab debunked these claims, stating that the individuals in the video were not state government enforcement officers. Upon investigation, it was confirmed that the individuals in question are enforcement officers from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC),” Wahab explained. “Their actions are part of an enforcement exercise targeting sachet water that does not comply with NAFDAC regulations and is in the interest of public health and safety.

Focus on Plastic Waste Management

Wahab emphasized that the administration, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has no plans to ban sachet water. Instead, its focus remains on addressing the environmental challenges posed by plastic waste.

Key initiatives include:

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): Mandating producers of sachets, PET bottles, and carrier bags of no less than 40 microns to manage their plastic waste responsibly.

Plastic Waste Management Fund: A collaboration between the government and producers to finance sustainable plastic waste solutions. In mid-October 2024, the government clarified that while the ban on single-use plastics and Styrofoam would take effect in January 2025, sachet water and PET bottles are excluded from this directive.

It is important to emphasize that Lagos State has not banned sachet water and does not have plans to do so. Our focus remains on effective plastic waste management,” Wahab reiterated-Wahab

The Lagos State Government continues to prioritize sustainable environmental policies while addressing public concerns. Citizens are urged to disregard misinformation about a sachet water ban and to support ongoing efforts to combat plastic waste in the state.
