FG to Create 25,000 Jobs Through Lagos Textile Zone
The Federal Government is set to generate over 25,000 jobs from the Lekki Textile and Garment Special Economic Zone (SEZ) located in Eyin-Osa, Epe, Lagos State. This project is expected to create 5,000 direct jobs and more than 20,000 indirect opportunities, according to Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi, Managing Director of the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA).
Compensation for Landowners
Dr. Ogunyemi, represented by Mrs. Chika Ibekwe, NEPZA’s Director of Zone Operations, disclosed this during a cash compensation event for the seven Eyin-Osa families who provided 240.09 acres of land for the project. Families compensated included those of Olayinka Salami, Muhammed Balogun, Bashorun Seidu, Iyanda, Matanmi Mobolaji, and Agara Onileyan.NEPZA emphasized that the project would benefit the community for generations through employment, improved infrastructure, and economic opportunities.
Economic Growth and Community Development
Dr. Ogunyemi highlighted that the SEZ aligns with the Federal Government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, focusing on generating employment, boosting exports, and attracting investments. He reassured the host communities of continued development under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The Lekki SEZ is already attracting significant investment to this once-remote area, and we are committed to fostering economic growth through mutual cooperation,” Ogunyemi stated. The initiative also includes plans for replication across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, urging states to take advantage of this economic development model.
The Lekki Textile and Garment SEZ is not just about creating jobs; it’s about transforming communities and driving Nigeria’s economic growth for generations to come.” – Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi, Managing Director, NEPZA.
Host Community’s Support
Muftau Shittu, president of the Eyin-Osa United Kingdom Development Association, expressed satisfaction with NEPZA’s approach. He noted that while the community had been peacefully practising farming, fishing, and other activities for over 500 years, land disputes began in 2003 when land grabbers claimed ownership. In 2008, the community’s land was transferred to the Lekki Free Trade Zone without adequate compensation, sparking a long struggle. Shittu expressed relief that NEPZA has now fulfilled its promises, calling it a positive step for economic growth. We are happy to cede this land for the project and pray the benefits of this cooperation continue to uplift our people,” he said. The Lekki Textile and Garment SEZ is expected to drive Nigeria’s economic transformation by serving as a hub for industries such as ICT, agro-processing, sports, and community development.
The Lekki Textile and Garment SEZ promises significant job creation and economic opportunities for Nigeria, it highlights the Federal Government’s commitment to community development and economic growth, the project sets a benchmark for sustainable partnerships between government and host communities, it demonstrates the potential of special economic zones to drive industrialization and attract investments, it serves as a model for replicating similar initiatives across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
