Globacom Celebrates Wole Soyinka @90 on CNN’s African Voices Playmakers 

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, will be the special guest on this weekend’s episode of African Voices Playmakers, a 30-minute magazine show sponsored by Globacom and broadcast on CNN International. 

Soyinka Shares His Journey on African Voices Playmakers 

In a statement released on Thursday, Globacom confirmed that the program will be hosted by renowned journalist Larry Madowo. The episode will feature an engaging conversation with Professor Soyinka, who will discuss the values, ideologies, and passion that shaped his exceptional career. Viewers will gain insight into the life of one of Africa’s most influential writers and activists. 

Commemorating Soyinka’s 90th Birthday 

This special edition, which celebrates Soyinka’s 90th birthday, will also highlight his remarkable activism. Soyinka will recount how his political experiences in Nigeria inspired some of his literary works, including a film based on his time in political incarceration, which is set for release later this year. Born on July 13, 1934, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Wole Soyinka became the first African to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986. He was recognized for his “wide cultural perspective and poetic overtones” that reflect the human drama of existence.

Soyinka’s Legacy and Awards 

Soyinka began his literary journey as a student at the University of Ibadan and later at the University of Leeds in the UK. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Benson Medal from the Royal Society of Literature in 1990 and the Europe Theatre Prize in 2017, among many others. Globacom revealed that the episode will air on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. on DSTV Channel 401, with repeat broadcasts on the same day at 12:00 p.m. Sunday viewers can catch the show at 4:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., while another repeat will air on Monday at 4:00 a.m. The edition will be rebroadcast the following weekend at similar times.
