Wike Urges Protesters to Follow Court Order 

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has called on residents to respect the court’s decision that limits protests to the Moshood Abiola National Stadium. This appeal came after a security meeting in Abuja on Thursday, following the start of a 10-day nationwide protest. 

Protest at the Stadium 

Wike explained that the court did not ban protests but specified that they should only take place at the stadium. This decision aims to prevent protests from turning violent and damaging property. He emphasized that security agencies would ensure that protesters stay within the designated area and that any attempt to move to other locations, like Eagle Square, would not be tolerated. Wike shared intelligence reports indicating that some people might attempt to use the protests as an excuse to cause destruction on Friday. He warned that such actions could lead to loss of life and stated that security forces are prepared to prevent any violence. 

Avoid Violence and Misconduct 

Referring to past incidents in Kano, Kaduna, and other states where protests became violent, Wike urged protesters to avoid causing trouble. He stressed the importance of peaceful protests and following the rule of law. Wike also encouraged Abuja residents to stay away from the protests to prevent any potential chaos. The minister revealed that a senator is suspected of sponsoring the protests and providing support to the protesters. He mentioned that security agencies would investigate the senator’s involvement in due time.

Government’s Commitment 

Wike assured Abuja residents that the government is working hard to address the issues raised by the protesters. He praised those who chose not to join the protests for their commitment to peace and commended the media for their responsible reporting. He also appreciated the security forces for their professionalism in handling the situation without resorting to violence.
