Minister Advises Students to Stay on Campus During Nationwide Protests

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has advised university students in Nigeria to remain on campus during the upcoming nationwide protests to ensure their safety. This advisory was communicated through the acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Chris Maiyaki, in a letter to Vice-Chancellors.

Minister’s Directive

In the letter, the Minister of Education highlighted the Federal Government’s recognition of the right to peaceful protest but emphasized concerns over the safety of university staff, students, and property. The directive to Vice-Chancellors is clear: take proactive measures to ensure the security of the university community.

Safety Measures for Universities

Vice-Chancellors are instructed to:

  • Issue statements reassuring the university community of their safety.
  • Advise students to stay on campus and focus on their academic activities, thus avoiding potential risks associated with the protests.

The Federal Government respects the right to peaceful protest but prioritizes the safety of our students and university communities. We urge all students to remain on campus during this period to avoid any potential danger and to continue focusing on their academic pursuits.” – Prof. Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education.

The Minister’s advisory underscores the government’s concern for the welfare of its students during a time of heightened social and political tension. By staying on campus and continuing their studies, students can avoid unnecessary exposure to danger, while universities take steps to protect their communities.
